Chapter Thirty-Three - Mikkal Takes Charge

Fenzela walked through the park accompanied by a young girl. She seated herself on the grass, watching as Bona ran off to play. Chilka’s daughter joined the Golden girl playing under the watchful eye of two pink-uniformed guards. The girls hugged each other and moved away, carefully thinking their play ideas on an open frequency for the guards to pick up.

Bona kept her thoughts loud and cheerful as Fenzela gave Jessina the message she wished to pass on, thought in swift bursts in Jessina’s own native tongue. Then Fenzela walked away to another part of the park, where Bona joined her shortly. Jessina’s guards were unaware of the contact.

Fenzela could not send her thoughts to the Golden Palace for fear Zadina or Mikkal might intercept them, but few would suspect Jessina. Devious to use children but a Golden child could keep secrets better than any Green, Blue or Silver adult. They had the ability to think on several levels without communicating between them that made it so hard to follow their thoughts.

Later Divak swam in the Golden Palace pool watched by his ever-present guards. He welcomed Jessina joining him in the water. They played ball together, keeping their upper thoughts on the game, but somehow Marina’s orders reached him. That afternoon Divak walked in the Palace gardens holding the hand of the little boy Opak who toddled beside him. The guards indolently watched the man and boy play together.

The boy slipped and Divak picked him up as they rounded a corner behind a tall heavily blossomed bush. The guards following a few metres behind searched because along the path there was no one. No Golden nephew of the queen and no little Golden boy. They had vanished.

Zadina showed no interest in Divak’s disappearance. Mikkal angrily ordered a search of Hemithea for them. He found himself making the decisions now Zadina seemed so disinterested. She told him she had to rest because of the baby, but he thought it was more than that. She wished to stop being queen. All the joy had been in the struggle - without the conflict it was just hard work.

He enjoyed being in control and thought he would make a better job of it than Zadina. While Zadina rested and bore his son, he would run Zenina. He recognised his own son within Zadina’s womb. Mikkal wondered whether his anger at Divak’s escape was the loss of hostages. The little boy had been special too. Mikkal had watched the child growing up, hoping Zadina’s son would be like him. Opak was how he wished his own son would be. Strange the boy did not look like Divak, but he doted on the child, surely the boy must be his?

Dismissing the affinity between himself and the child, Mikkal considered what to do next. The Kurgian Ambassador, who had only been in place a few months, saw him in private reporting his recall by King Ga’Mazadeh to Kochab. The new Ambassador would be Ga’Mazadeh’s man and would not bend to Mikkal’s wishes.
